Everything Doesn’t Have to Be Figured Out Today

Sundays at the Cafe… Reflections on faith, family, and the values that shape our lives and businesses.

There are Sundays when I have to remind myself that everything doesn’t need to be figured out before I can enjoy the day.

The unfinished work will still be there. The decision I have been turning over in my mind may need more information, another conversation, or simply more time. The concern that followed me home on Friday may not be resolved before Monday.

Yet here is Sunday, offering a few quiet hours. And I have a choice about how much of it I surrender to things I cannot settle this morning.

Last week, we began Sundays at the Cafe by asking whether the people and principles we value most are receiving the attention they deserve. This week, I find myself considering something that often gets in the way: the feeling that we must get everything under control before we can allow ourselves to be fully present.

After more than four decades in business, I know how easily that feeling can take hold. There is almost always something requiring attention. If peace depends on finishing everything, we can spend a great deal of our lives waiting for it.

So, pull up a chair. Let the coffee stay warm for a while.

The Responsibility We Carry into the Quiet

When you are accustomed to being the person others depend on, stepping away can feel uncomfortable.

You are the one who answers the question, finds another option, makes the difficult call, or reassures everyone that a way forward exists. Over time, being available becomes so familiar that even a quiet morning can leave you feeling as though you have forgotten something.

We may be sitting at the kitchen table while mentally reviewing a conversation with a client. We may be listening to someone we love while calculating what needs to happen next week. The phone doesn’t even have to ring. We have learned to interrupt ourselves.

I recognize that habit in myself.

Sometimes, beneath it is a concern that loosening our grip means letting someone down. We care about our commitments. We understand the consequences of overlooking a problem. We have worked hard to become dependable.

But dependability can include knowing when something can wait. It can include trusting the people around us, acknowledging our limits, and giving our families time in which they do not have to compete with every unresolved issue in our lives.

We can care deeply about our responsibilities and still give ourselves permission to rest.

An Ordinary Morning Is Worth Our Attention

There is something worth protecting in an unhurried morning.

A cup of coffee enjoyed without checking messages between sips. A few pages of a book read for the pleasure of reading. A conversation with an old friend that lasts longer than planned because neither person is rushing to end it.

Holding hands with someone you love.

These moments are easy to overlook because they rarely demand anything from us. They arrive quietly. They can be postponed without an immediate consequence, which makes postponing them remarkably easy.

Yet much of what we treasure about our lives is made of precisely these experiences.

We remember someone’s laugh. The way a familiar kitchen smelled on Sunday afternoon. A story told around the table. The comfort of sitting beside a person with whom silence felt natural.

There is value in letting today contain a few such moments without asking them to accomplish anything else.

Read because the book interests you. Take a walk because the air feels good. Enjoy a favorite meal without hurrying through it. Stay in the conversation long enough to discover something you didn’t know about someone you thought you knew well.

Pleasure does not always need a practical explanation.

What the Changing Season Reminds Us

As the leaves begin to change, I am reminded of how easily a season can pass while we are busy thinking about what comes next.

We look ahead to the next project, the next milestone, the next point at which things might settle down. Then one morning, we notice that the light has changed. A holiday is approaching. Another month has slipped by.

Looking ahead has its place. Much of building a business requires it. But I don’t want to become so occupied with preparing for the next season that I barely experience the one I am living through.

The same is true of the seasons within our families.

People grow older. Children build lives of their own. Familiar routines change. Opportunities to gather become harder to coordinate. A seemingly ordinary Sunday is taking place within circumstances that will not remain exactly as they are.

That thought makes me want to pay closer attention.

To ask another question. To make the call while I am thinking of the person. To notice who is sitting across from me and be grateful that we have this time together.

Making Room for Faith, Gratitude, and Rest

For me, faith belongs in this reflection because it asks me to acknowledge how much lies beyond my control.

I can prepare carefully, act responsibly, and keep my commitments. I can also admit that worry will not provide every answer.

Prayer offers room for that admission. So does a quiet moment of gratitude before the day begins. There is relief in recognizing that I do not have to carry every concern as though its resolution depends on my constant attention.

Some Sundays will still be difficult. A real problem may need us. Grief, uncertainty, or exhaustion may make happiness feel far away. We need not turn enjoying the day into another standard we are failing to meet.

We can begin gently.

Accept a hug. Step outside for a few minutes. Share a meal. Let someone know how we are doing. Notice one thing for which we are grateful, even while other things remain hard.

Sometimes, making room for peace starts with allowing the day to be imperfect.

A Final Reflection

This Sunday, consider what you have been waiting to resolve before allowing yourself to enjoy your life.

Is there something that truly requires your attention today? Give it the care it needs. Then consider what can reasonably wait—and allow yourself to leave it there for a while.

Call an old friend. Lend a hand. Read a few pages. Enjoy your favorite food. Hold hands with someone you love.

Let a pleasant moment last without reaching immediately for the next task.

There will be more to do. There will always be more to consider. Today also deserves some of your attention.

Choose happiness where you can find it. Let the small moments count.

Just be.

For the Week Ahead

May the week ahead bring you the judgment to recognize what needs your attention and the peace to let other things wait. May your faith steady you when answers come slowly, and may the people you love receive time in which you are fully present.

May you find reasons to smile in the middle of an ordinary day—and give yourself permission to enjoy them.

Until we gather again at Sundays at the Cafe, may you make room for the life unfolding around you, even while some things remain unfinished.

About Sundays at the Cafe

Sundays at the Cafe is a weekly series by Paul Segreto at Acceler8Success Cafe exploring faith, family, values, traditions, and the experiences that shape our lives and businesses. Each Sunday offers a moment to pause, reflect, and consider how our everyday choices honor what matters most.

Weekly Review April 24-30

With so much going on at Acceler8Success Cafe I know it’s easy to miss a newsletter or two, or possibly our Question of the Week slipped by without you noticing, or an announcement we may have made just seemingly got lost amongst the busy news feed. Well, just like an experience at your local cafe, I really want Acceler8Success Cafe to be conveniently located when you desire or need to relax, enjoy a cup of coffee, and catch up on some reading.

Okay, I may be going bit far with this, but my goal is for Acceler8Success Cafe to be your virtual cafe. A place where you may frequently visit to enjoy a few minutes to yourself. I’d like the experience to be memorable by providing learning opportunities, by presenting a different perspective & insight, by spurring thought & reflection, by encouraging interaction, and by spotlighting topics that, frankly, may not be as front and center as they should or need to be.

To that end, Acceler8Success Cafe is open for business daily, seven days a week. For the benefit of current & aspiring entrepreneurs, our daily newsletter will be delivered each morning. Our Question of the Week along with an occasional announcement will be delivered at various times throughout the week.

As a way to jumpstart the week ahead, we also will deliver a weekly review each Sunday morning which will include articles you might have missed during the previous week. My goal is to provide an opportunity to begin the new week with information and ideas that possibly could accelerate your success.

Maintain Work Life Balance

Often, Saturday mornings feel like a much-needed rest stop after driving all day. You know the feeling, right?

You come to a stop and take a deep breath as your arms drop from the steering wheel. It’s then you feel the tenseness in your hands from gripping the wheel tighter than you had realized. A stretch before exiting the car helps the transition from the focus required as you managed your three-thousand-pound vehicle through traffic, turns, sudden stops, other drivers, less than ideal weather conditions, etc.

Upon exiting your vehicle, you stretch once again – this time just a bit longer as you work out the slight pains in your neck or knees. Maybe even a couple of sharp twists of the neck, without even realizing what has really become a habit of sorts – a routine to transition to relaxation and to your next steps, whatever those may be.

Saturdays are key to the transition from the past week. It’s key to the maintaining work-life balance that is essential to your well-being, and to your success. Sometimes, forcing yourself into the right mindset to establish a sense of calm is necessary. Determining ways to do so is essential.

Now you’re ready to move through the day of different activities that will take you further away from the mental weight of the work week. Whether it’s physical work in the yard or a heart-pounding bicycle ride or even a stroll through the mall, you’ll be recharging your batteries while re-energizing your mind.

Have you ever felt your computer was just a bit faster after restarting? And have you ever sensed your car drove just a bit better after washing it? One is actually a real experience while the other is perception, and that’s perfectly okay as both are positive experiences, each in their own way.

I believe Saturdays are “mindset” days. The song, Saturday in the Park by Chicago seems to pop into my mind quite often and for me, epitomizes that mindset, especially the last lines of the lyrics…

“People reaching, people touching. A real celebration. Waiting for us all. If we want it, really want it. Can you dig it (yes, I can)? And I’ve been waiting such a long time. For the day, yeah, yeah.”

I strongly recommend taking a few minutes to sit back right now and listen to the entire song or better yet, watch this video. I believe you’ll find your feet tapping to the melody as you visualize the experience, and wait for it, you’ll begin to smile. Trust me. It will happen!!

How to Improve Your Work-Life Balance Today

Relaxed. Recharged. Re-energized. I’m now ready for Sunday.

To many, Sunday is considered the end of the weekend. To me, it’s the start of a new week, a new beginning.

I love the quiet and solitude of Sunday mornings as I awake by 4AM. I use the time to think about possibilities as I catch up on reading, reviewing the many publications, newsletters & blogs to which I subscribe. Sunday afternoons are typically reserved for family time.

Preparing for the week ahead is reserved for Sunday evenings and typically takes me well into the night. This ensures a stress-free start to the week ahead and goes a long way toward achieving goals. Doing so actually helps plan for free evenings during the week. This allows me to maintain a work-life balance as family commitments & events are firmly in place on my calendar, not to be interrupted by work.
